“The story behind these socials is that back in 2018 the QLDA committee wanted a unique event that hadn’t been seen before; an event that would unite our huge state; an event that all members could attend. In our first year of the association we knew that a “Gala” or a “Ball” would be too big to co-ordinate so it was suggested that we start small with a social, hence the idea of “Synchronised Socials”.
In 2018, the Synchronised Socials were held at four venues; El Arish (Nth Qld), Rockhampton (Central Qld), Childers (Wide Bay) and Geebung (SE Qld).
The “Club Shirt” themed socials started at 10am and went through to 4pm, a marathon of dancing throughout the day. The “synchonised part” kicked in with the 4 venues doing 3 dances at allocated times: Come Dance With Me at 10am, Lonely Drum at 1.30pm and Boot Scootin’ Boogie at 3.45pm.
QLDA organisers had several cameras up and running at each of the venues, some recorded to upload later, some recorded to a live feed that went out on our Facebook page. Childers crossed linked their Boot Scootin’ Boogie with Brisbane and it was noticed that we were just out by 2 beats, which was pretty awesome to be so closely synchonised. Three out of the four venues ran with a programmed social, Brisbane chose to run a request social.
Each venue was well supported by the dance groups from the areas. Being a new event we were uncertain how it would go but from all accounts from the organisers the atmosphere was one of celebration and everyone had an enjoyable day of dancing. The committee had chosen to donate all funds raised from the day which was around $2000.00 to the Royal Flying Doctors Service Queensland, for the wonderful job this organisation does for all Queenslanders.”
